because i can

When I am feeling lazy and the couch is calling my name, sometimes I can motivate myself to put on my running shoes and get out the door by using my running mantra. Other times, Mike makes me go. When I don't feel like running, or I'm in the middle of a hard workout, or I'm 5 miles from home and I feel like stopping, I keep going by saying to myself, "because I can." It's my running mantra because it keeps me pushing ahead. It's also sort of my way of expressing gratitude. I can breathe. I can run. I'm here.

I think about that when I'm running, too, Em. I remember how lucky I am to have the use of my legs, to be strong enough to run 6 or 7 miles, to be young enough to do it without feeling serious pain.

Also, I think, "If I start walking it will take forever to get home."

Since you shared your (much better) motivations, here's one that, to this day, helps me ... when I was in college, training for basketball, we did lots of different running workouts. And it always helped me to picture the point guard on our team right behind me. I always wanted to beat her by as long a distance as I could, so picturing her on my heels would keep me going. (competitive much?) ;)
